Recent Searches Made At Windows Assistance July 23, 2001
From time to time (maybe once a month) I will report on what terms visitors to this site are searching for. I should have started doing this much sooner. Like back when I first installed the Atomz search feature.

note: 3D Pinball is a favorite search term. I found the tips that explain the process to get Pinball working in Windows 98 if you had installed it using the Windows 95 Plus! CD. Check the July 13, 2001 and the December 12, 2000 Tips.

frontpage

This site uses FrontPage 2000. We started a FrontPage site but got no response (visitors) and decided to freeze it. If you visit the site there is a page (click on the Resources button at the bottom) that list many sites that really do support FrontPage.

registry

Not recommended that average user try editing the registry. This is where Windows keeps data on running Windows and applications. I recently had to reload an application because something happened to the registry data for that application. The application was still installed but wouldn't run until I reload it! So beware. Even if you never fool around with the registry it can still bite you. If you must play with the registry you might drop into this site and see what they have to say: Windows Registry Guide

dual monitors

Microsoft Knowledge Base article Q182708: Hardware Requirements for Multiple Display Support in Windows 98 and Q179602: How to Enable Multiple Display Support Using Windows 98 will aid you in getting dual monitors working on your system.

98lite

98lite is a set of utilities that allow you to remove parts of Windows that you find waste-full or unnecessary.  Find out how to uninstall parts of Windows 98 and lighten the load on your resources. Want to remove Internet Explorer and Outlook Express? They will show you how.

Looks like file extensions. There are a couple of web sites that can help you in determining what types of files they are:

Extension Search: Just input in your questionable file extension for short definition. It can also take you directly to the extension's definition page at Wotsit.

Computer User - File Types: Complete listing of file extensions. Search page to find an extension definition.

unplug
unplug and eject
unplug eject

I think this person wants to eject a CD from their CD-ROM. Almost all CD player software (Audio?) has an eject command. You can also eject a CD using Windows Explorer. Open My Computer and Right-click on the CD-ROM icon and select eject.

memory leaks

I believe they are referring to the loss of system resources over time and that you need to re-start Windows to get everything back to normal. Whatever normal is. Windows comes with a resource meter that will keep you informed of the percent of resources you still have available. From the Start button select Programs >> Accessories >> Systems Tools >> Resource Meter. I have this utility running full time on the Windows Assistance computer. For an excellent overview of this problem go to Fred Langa's series on curing your Windows 98 resource leaks. Part one, two, three, and four.

pgp

Pretty Good Protection. This utility will encrypt your messages using public key encryption.

tweak win98

Do they mean TweakUI?

To install TweakUI in Windows 98:

  1. Insert the Windows 98 CD-ROM (not the Windows 98 Second Edition CD-ROM) into the CD-ROM drive. You must use the Windows 98 CD-ROM.
  2. If you receive a notification that the CD-ROM is from an earlier version of Windows and that the Setup feature will be disabled, click OK.
  3. Click Browse This CD on the Windows 98 CD-ROM menu.
  4. Double-click to open the Tools, Reskit, and Powertoy folders.
  5. Right-click the Tweakui.inf file, and then click Install.
To use the TweakUI tool after you install it, click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double-click TweakUI.

TweakUI for Other Versions of Windows

There is a later version of TweakUI that works with Microsoft Windows 95, Windows 98, Microsoft Windows 98 Second Edition, Windows Me, and Microsoft Windows 2000. To download the TweakUI 1.33 update, see the following Microsoft Web site:
http://www.microsoft.com/ntworkstation/

my documents

This is the default folder for ALL documents created by any and all applications. Can be easily changed using TweakUI. Otherwise you need to go to the registry and manually change the folder location. Not a good idea. From TweakUI: My Computer >> TweakUI. Now select the My Computer tab and from the Folder drop-down list select My Documents. Then click the Change Location button to select a new folder location.
